A Tale of Two Ministries.
Why Baptism is so Important to me!!
By Art Irvine
This article has been re-written and edited from an article I wrote several years ago about the Church of Christ/Christian Churches and their ministries and missions. I have found that some are drifting from the old Jerusalem, Apostolic doctrine. I invite all to read and take heed of this warning. Even though all should read it, this article is specifically pointed at those who are members of the Churches of Christ/Christian Churches and have or are considering any compromise of the doctrine or entering fellowship or ministry with interdenominational groups. We will explore the drift away from New Testament Christianity to a doctrine that tries to appeal to the masses.
Hebrews 2:1-4 "For this reason we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will."
While in the US Navy I was stationed in Norfolk Virginia. Norfolk, being surrounded by water on several sides, has three bridge tunnels connecting it to the other shores close by. On at least two occasions a Navy ship drifted at its anchorage and rammed into one of these bridge tunnels, shutting it down for a time until repairs could be made. The person that was to watch for such a thing was not watching as the ship drifted. He wasn't paying close enough attention to the ship he was on.
We were not watching. We are adrift. Instead of drifting on a collision course we are drifting away. Our sinfulness has kept us from the fellowship that we could have with God. Jesus Christ made up for our sin when He went to the cross and died a physical and even a spiritual death. He was separated from God, His Father, for a short time because of our sin, so we wouldn't have to experience separation. Then He conquered sin and death and rose from the grave to glorify God and give us a chance to have a reward. When we are obedient to Him, He is not ashamed to call us brothers.
We must now pay closer attention to what Jesus has said so we don't continue to drift away. The old law was given through the angels and was unalterable because it was from God. Jesus Christ came in the flesh to dwell among us for a time and to teach us what we must know in order for us to receive the reward. He came from God as God in the flesh, Matt. 1:23. He gave us the word that guides us and He gave us salvation. If we drift away we will not get to heaven to be with God. We need to be anchored in Jesus and our anchor must hold.
We need to be ever watchful, guarding against false doctrine and drifting at all times, lest we drift away. I find that I need to take a stand and take sides. I wanted to sound an alarm but it has already been sounded by other faithful, knowledgeable, Christian leaders. I am glad for these leaders that have not shrunk from teaching the truth of the word of God. When they sounded the alarm and gave the warning the clear signal was that the devil is in the camp and many people are in turmoil. The same old things are at stake that have been down through the ages. The salvation message centering on baptism for the forgiveness of sin is the central issue with some of the other issues such as the Lord's Supper not far behind. Other doctrinal issues, such as church government, are important but not as big an issue as baptism for salvation, in my estimation. We need to agree on who the saved are, and then deal with other issues.
