The Trend of Society Today
By Art Irvine

Have you noticed the trend of society over the past forty years? I hear people talk about the changes that were made just in the last twenty years. The internet is especially filled with things a grown person shouldn't see or do, let alone a child. If we aren't careful it even comes in our email. I opened one or two in the course of getting my email, a few years ago, and couldn't find the delete key soon enough. When we don't do anything about it we are actually allowing this stuff in. The first few times I opened these kinds of things and found things that I knew weren't good for me; I actually attempted to report it to authorities. It has been a couple of years, at least, and I haven't heard back about these lewd and lawless perpetrators of the internet. The best thing we can do at this point is to make sure our spam blocker has been notified so it will block them next time. I have learned to recognize the "bad" ones and push the spam button right away before opening them. The children's computer activities need to be monitored also. Most of us wouldn't think of going to these porn sites even though we have the temptation to do so. Those that cannot resist the temptation should (in a strong hour) place restrictions on the computer that would not be easily bypassed. Another way of defeating these temptations is to have a partner or an accountability person that would agree to help you overcome these temptations. That is one of the functions of the church (or is supposed to be). We are to look out for one another. When we can go to church and be totally autonomous from the other people we set ourselves up to fail. A church (congregation) that does not advocate the "buddy system" or accountability cannot help you overcome the temptations of life.
Even though the internet is the most convenient and most private (in your own homes) now, it isn't just the internet. Magazines still abound for those who aren't able to or don't want to see this debauchery on the internet. The ability to keep putting this sin out there is because so many are spending their money on it. The porn industry stays in business because they make money from those who cannot resist buying and looking at it. I must admit, I have trouble with it myself. If I am not careful I will be drawn into the temptation to look. My money will never go to that stuff again (it hasn't since before I married my wife). I told my wife that she is my Playboy Centerfold from now on. That was over thirty five years ago. To think, that old villain is still alive to rot the brains of our culture even more. I see his daughter has taken over the leadership and has not wavered from her father's debauchery. Playboy magazine paved the way for many other magazines to become popular in our society. These other magazines are even worse than Playboy. This has all lead to a general decline of the societal morals for several decades now. This has also lead to a marked increase of crimes against our children and young people. The removal of God from the public schools in the 1960's, the removal of censors in the movie and entertainment industry over the last thirty years and the trend of our society to liberalize with time have produced a society that has the morals of a pack of wild dogs. They are uninterested in spiritual things because they don't think they have to be. They are getting what they want now and the hereafter is not important. Even those who believe in God, heaven and an after-life could care less about the consequences of acting contrary to the laws of the God, that some say they would not deny.
The sex business isn't the only business that has had an increase; the violence in the movies and TV has lead to a society that is near ruined with the violence on each other. I must admit we are not quite as bad off as I had envisioned twenty years ago but our schools are no longer safe havens for the children. Even the college campuses which, because of their nature, have more crime than the public school campuses have even more problems because of this steady decline in morals.
