The Adoption Papers
Gal. 4:4-6
Sermon by Art Irvine
When I was a child in school someone planted in my mind the possibility that I might be adopted. They said that some children don't know that they are adopted because their adoptive parents don't tell them. They further complicated the matter by saying that the adopted child may never see their real parents again. I went on for what seems now several years with those thoughts. I finally had to admit that I was not adopted when I kept going into town and the people there said to me "aren't you Billy Irvine's kid, you look just like him." Eventually I settled down to the fact that I am their real or biological son because I look just like my father. Because I am their son I am heir not only to their looks but also to their earthly goods and promises.
If my parents were of a royal line I would be considered of royalty. Likewise if my parents were poor I would be considered poor also. When we are adopted by someone we would be considered of that family. Their wealth, in most cases, would be our wealth, and so on. If we are in the orphanage and we are adopted out of it we would be considered to be freed from the obligation that brought us there and of our past life. Even though adoption in the early ages was somewhat different than our concept of adoption now we can see a parallel between our modern day concept and what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.
When Christ died on that cross He made the way for us to be adopted by God the Father. He signed the adoption papers so to speak. His blood shed on Calvary gave us a chance to be children of God and heirs to his promise of eternal life. We don't have to look like anyone or have special blood to have this chance. That is of course except for the blood of Christ. He paid the price for our adoption. We have been freed of our past life and those responsibilities. That is we are free of the eternal consequences of sin.
Now I said "a chance" to become children and heirs. We must obey Him, God the Father through Jesus Christ the son. Jesus, being God's true one and only son, obeyed the Father until the end. He gave His apostles, prophets and writers instructions for all to follow.
*Heb. 1:1-12*
The author, in writing to the Hebrews, puts Jesus Christ above all the angels. He lifts Him above mankind, putting Him on the throne of God the Father, in heaven, His rightful place being the Son of God. These verses being quoted from the Old Testament are quoted to testify to the deity of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament writers looked for a better sacrifice, a better king and a better Son of God than given in Adam. *I Cor. 15:21-22&45* We are sons of the first Adam. We can't escape the bonds of our own sin without the one who conquered death and sin, Jesus Christ God's Son. A Perfect person had to shed His blood and die that I might be saved and adopted by God.
There are some today that do not believe these verses written about Jesus and teach a contrary doctrine. They follow angels and other created things. Their teaching could only be described as being from the devil. They don't believe that Jesus Christ is God's only Son. They believe God had
