My Cat Is Color Blind
By Art Irvine
It must be colorblind. It associates with all the other cats that come around the yard, even cats of other colors. It does all the usual cat things with these other cats. It scratches itself, cleans itself and even eats with these cats of other colors. Their color doesn't seem to bother it a bit. Even the one with the ugliest spots I have ever seen on a cat, doesn't seem to bother it. There are also several black cats that eat with my cat. You know what they say about black cats. You can't trust them. They may have some black power that could affect others. These black cats don't seem to have affected my cat at all, even after several years of association. My cat is gray with long fur. Maybe the gray color is not different enough for the other cats to have affected it adversely or keep them from having a relationship. I have another cat, though, that is an orange color. It doesn't seem to be affected by the color of the other cats either. Except for their usual cat spats they associate with each other like they were brothers and sisters.
Cats are just dumb animals. What do they know? After all they act like animals. They aren't embarrassed by not wearing any clothes and they are accustomed to living outdoors. Sounds like some people today; they act like animals in their modesty. They get along like cat and dog in their race relationships. Some, though, have good relationships with the people of other races and color around them. I commend them on their love, no matter what.
I'm not suggesting that people act like cats. I understand the difference between a cat and a person. I'm trying to point out how we are when we can't accept other people because of the color of their skin, or some other difference.
I'm not suggesting that we accept the sinner with his sin as if he were saved. I am suggesting that we try to fellowship with people of other races and color. We can't sit back and say to ourselves, "let them come to me and I'll accept them." The fellowship will never happen. The cats have a common ground around the food bowl. Do we have common ground with others around our fellowship table whether it is the Lord's Table or the supper table spread in the fellowship hall? Invite other people to eat with you. The more color the better. Let love be the motivation. John 15:12 says, "This is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you." Let the fellowship be the goal. When we let selfishness be the motivation and exclusion the goal we destroy the mission of the church. Heb. 13:1-2 says, "Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing this some have entertained angels without knowing it." Open hearts, open invitation and open doors to all could and should be the message we send to others. I don't want to say that all are saved but all are invited. I sang a song in Sunday school when I was a child that went, "Red and yellow, black and white, all are precious in His sight." It's time we lived that song. Let us be as color blind as my cat.
Psalms 119:63 "I am a companion to all those who fear thee, and of those who keep thy precepts."
