"Fulfill Your Ministry"
II Timothy 4:1-5; "I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths. You be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
Paul's letters to Timothy gives the church instruction on how an evangelist, that is, a preacher should conduct his ministry. The instruction above is a small part of the instruction in the letters but it is as important as all the rest. We are told in I Corinthians 1:21 "For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." Salvation is the most important part of the Gospel. Since Jesus died for our salvation how could we neglect to preach Jesus and His salvation from pulpit or podium? Through the foolishness of preaching we offer salvation to those willing to accept. In our Wednesday night study of Acts we saw that Philip taught the Ethiopian eunuch Jesus Christ's suffering, resurrection and the means by which we should be saved. Today's religious group seems to think repentance, confession of Jesus Christ and baptism for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit are profanity. To tell the truth is to be unloving and even pugnacious. Forget that the apostles set the church in order in the first century with these exact teachings. We are again faced with a crisis in this country. For a country as "Christian" as the USA we have wandered such a long way from the truth "once delivered to the saints." In our worship service at Community Christian Church of Christ, interspersed with other sermons, we will be studying the book of Romans. The current topic is the comparison of faithful to unfaithfulness, righteousness with unrighteousness and the condemnation of the unfaithful and the unrighteous. This world seems to be rushing toward condemnation. Certain teachers are teaching our children a version of situation ethics that says, "let the situation dictate what you do or say, not some code of conduct." That kind of teaching will produce and has produced a society turning from God, faithless and unrighteous. What is the biggest component of this situation ethics lifestyle? False doctrine makes up the biggest part of this lifestyle. People don't want to hear the truth preached because it is too convicting. They are afraid someone will convict them of their favorite sin or sins. What is your point Art? The point is the preacher has to preach both popular topics and the unpopular topics. You can help though. Support preachers that preach the popular and the unpopular topics. Your country, your community, your home and you will be better for it. The preacher should only preach what he sees in the pages of the Bible, with leeway for illustrations of course. If you don't like what is preached you actually have a say in what is preached. You have two ways to show your preference for sound preaching and teaching. You have a voice and you have legs (or at least means of motivation). If saying something doesn't produce results let them preach their sugarcoated pabulum without you next time.
